How to Find a Sugar Momma: What Wealthy Women Actually Want, From a Man Who Lived It

I was 25, broke, in Tokyo, and dating like a madman when the first one found me. Here's what a sugar momma is, why she does it, where they are, and the rules that keep you a man.

Most men hear "sugar momma" and either laugh or get judgmental. I did both, until I had one. Then I had another. I was 25, in Tokyo, making about two thousand dollars a month, and I learned more about money, women and myself in those two years than in the ten before them.

I'm going to tell you what a sugar momma actually is, why a wealthy woman does this, where they are, and the rules that keep you a man while you're in it. No dating site is going to tell you this, because none of it can be sold to you. It has to be lived.

What a sugar momma actually is

A sugar momma (some write sugar mama) is a woman with real money who pays for the life she wants to live with you. Dinners, travel, the apartment, the clothes she wants you to wear to her places. In return she gets your time, your company, your energy, and yes, your body.

Here's what men get wrong about it from the start. It isn't charity and it isn't a con. It's a trade between two people with different needs. If you try to get money from a woman who has the same amount of money as you, you're a scumbag. If a woman has so much money that money literally does not matter to her, and what she lacks is a fun, fit, calm man who treats her like a person, then you are providing something she can't buy at the store. That's the whole thing. Get that straight before you go any further, because if you don't, you'll either feel ashamed or act like a taker, and both will end it.

My first one

I wasn't looking. I was dating a lot of girls, working, studying Japanese, drinking eighteen cups of coffee a day to stay awake. Then I met a woman who was 35. To me at 25 that was an older woman. She looked like a college student. She was an accomplished pianist, sophisticated, and she always brought something when we met. A bag of groceries. A sweater. Front-row tickets to the Japan Open. Museums, the orchestra, a steak dinner, a weekend in Singapore. She knew I was working and studying and she'd just say, let me get this.

The days with her were different from the days with the other girls. The other girls got the park and my apartment because that's what two thousand a month buys. She took me into a world I'd never seen. It wasn't the money. It was that she wanted to do interesting things and wanted a man to do them with.

The second one had more money than the first. A gold Rolex. A gold chain so heavy I couldn't run with it. A fur coat I'd never have bought in a thousand years, but she liked to show me off, so I wore it when she was around. When I wanted to start a business she set up the company and paid the first employees. Money was not an object for her. Nothing was. What she wanted was my time.

Here's what surprised me most: they treated me better than the regular girls did. Less drama, less testing, more fun. They wanted a good time and they wanted a man who could give them one.

Why she does it: what a wealthy woman actually wants

Imagine you inherit a hundred million dollars tomorrow. What changes? Everything you did because you secretly needed money disappears. The people you tolerated. The favors you did. The places you went hoping to meet someone useful. A truly wealthy woman has already lived that. She doesn't need anything from you. Not advice, not directions, not a good deal on a car.

So what's left? Three things.

Positive energy. This is the number one thing. Wealthy people do not want negative people around them, ever. It's why their circles are small. If something goes wrong and you shrug it off and keep the day fun, you're already rarer than you think.

No neediness. Everyone in her life wants something from her. The waiter, the guy who cleans the fish tank, the cousins. She can smell it. A man who doesn't need her money is the only man she can relax with.

To be treated like a normal woman. She gets "yes ma'am" all day. She's tired of the fake world. A man who laughs with her, tells her the truth, takes her to bed like he means it, and treats her like a person instead of a bank, is giving her the thing she can't buy. And her wealth comes with real fears most people never think about: being used, being sued, even being kidnapped. I always took a little bit of the protector role, because I understood she had vulnerabilities most people don't.

Don't ever write rich people off as spoiled or selfish. It's lazy and it's wrong. They're human beings with different needs at a different stage. Figure out the needs. Meet them. That's all any relationship is.

Get yourself right first

If you find a good one and you're not ready, it's a tragedy. So before you go looking:

Be in shape. Not Mr. Universe. Just not carrying the extra fifteen pounds. Your body is the first thing she sees and the thing she's paying to be close to. Everything on this list is good for you anyway, which is the point.

Be good in bed. Every sugar momma I had wanted that, every time. You don't have to be a legend. You can't be a disappointment.

Fix your mindset. The thought is not "here's a rich woman I can take advantage of." The thought is: who is she, what's her situation, can I bring value to her life, and will this be fun for me? If the answer to the last one is no, it's not a relationship, it's a job, and you'll be bad at it.

Be the guy everyone can read. Everything you are is obvious to everyone around you. If you're optimistic, fun, generous with men as well as women, people know. If you're jealous and calculating, people know that too. You can't fake this. You have to actually become it.

Where to find a sugar momma

The honest answer: once you're ready, they're already around you. There is more money sloshing around the world right now than at any time in history. You just haven't been looking.

Travel. I've almost always met these women when I was out of my element. In your hometown you're the guy from that family who drives that car. Somewhere else, you're just the interesting man at the table.

Go where they are. Museums. The tennis tournament. The high-end mall. The good part of town. If you're a gardener, take the job in the rich neighborhood. See your movies at the theater in the nice district. If the expensive yoga studio has a thirty-day trial and you're broke, take it and go to two classes a day. Put yourself in the room. Don't go out "looking for a sugar momma." Go out to live a bigger life, and start talking to people.

Learn to spot real money. This is a skill, and the staff at Gucci get trained in it. Plenty of women have nice clothes and no money at all. Real money is in the details: clothes with no logos that are clearly expensive, the shoes, the watch, the way she doesn't check prices. Practice on yourself first. Look at how you dress and ask how a stranger could tell you're broke. Then reverse it.

The look. The training-wheels version: a woman in her forties who has not let herself go. She still dresses with a little sex in it. Heels, a red dress, the work she's had done. Most women her age have stopped trying. She hasn't. That's a sign she's still open, and still interested.

These are crutches to get you started, not rules. Some sugar mommas are twenty. Some are seventy. Start with the easy pattern and your eye will sharpen.

The rules once you're in

This is where most men blow it, and it's never about the money.

Never embarrass her. The one thing a wealthy woman dreads is losing face in front of her friends. The guy who talks too loud, eats wrong, gasps at the wine list. Learn the scene the way you'd learn any new scene: watch, ask, pick it up fast. She doesn't care that you're from a trailer park. She cares that you're smooth and quick. When there are two forks, use your brain.

Handle the bill like a man. She knows you can't pay for five-thousand-dollar nights, and a real one doesn't want you trying. So here's the move. Early on, say: babe, you got the last one, why don't you put some money in my pocket before we go out so I can take care of the bill. Watch her face. She will light up, because now in public there's a man paying, and nobody at the table has to think about it. Then you pay it the way you'd pay for a burger. No ceremony, no flinching at the number, a fair tip, thank the staff, and leave with her on your arm. She'll love you for it.

Ask, don't know it all. Every world has rules. What you wear to the club, what you bring to a house in the hills versus a house in a trailer park. She knows all of them. Be open about what you don't know. "I've never been somewhere like this, what's customary?" A man who learns fast is what she wants. A know-it-all who's wrong is what she fears.

No politics. No monologues. I blew up a relationship when I was young by talking the way I talked with my friends. Wealthy rooms don't talk that way. Read the room before you open your mouth.

Respect what she pays for. If she puts you in an apartment, do not bring other women to it. The walls have ears. The doorman talks, and she may be paying him to. Everyone knows who pays the rent, and if three girls come through, she loses face and you're done. I'm not telling you how to run your life. I'm telling you to be smart and show respect for what's hers.

Never get dependent. This is the one that matters most. The day you need the watch, the car, the apartment, the trips, she will sense it and lose respect for you, and it all falls apart. Remember who you are. I grew up in a trailer park. I've lived on cans of beans and loved that life too. None of the gold means anything to me, and I could walk away from all of it any day. That's the armor. You're always ready to leave. That's what keeps you a man in it instead of a pet.

What it gives you, if you do it right

Connections you could never make on your own. I've walked into banks that laughed me out the week before and been handed a cappuccino and a signature line because her friend owned the place. Business, travel, people, a bigger picture of what's possible. So don't think small. Not the fur coat. Think: what do I want to build, where do I want to go, how can I help this woman get what she wants, and what can I learn from her world that I'd never see from mine?

And whether it lasts or not, every single thing on this list makes you a better man. Fit. Calm. Fun. Generous. Good with people, good in a nice room, good with money you didn't earn and better with money you did.

Is it for you?

It's an option, not a life. I'm not saying go get one or always have one. I'm saying the world is full of options you've never considered, and this is one of them. For a young, ambitious man especially, it can be a hell of a way to start. You eat well, you travel, you meet people you'd never meet, and she's happy to do it.

I shamed myself about it for a while, because I was raised to believe the man pays for everything. Then I lived it and found out it was one of the best, most interesting, lowest-drama chapters of my life, and that I'd added something real to hers.

Get yourself right first. Keep your independence. Treat her like a person. The rest finds you.

If you want to talk about this with men who've lived some life, that's what the summits are for. And if the bigger lesson here landed, that a free man is one who needs nothing, start with this one.
