A surf kid from San Clemente who moved to Tokyo in the bubble years, rode a motorcycle across India, built companies in Shanghai, and started again in Thailand. I'm in my sixties now. This is what happened, and why I spend my time on other men.
In order, the way it happened.
I started in a trailer park in Arizona and ended up a surf kid in San Clemente in the 1970s, the golden era of California surf. I caught my first wave then and never really got out of the water. Fifty years on, I'm still in it.

I moved to Tokyo when the bubble was at full height. Taught English at top schools, then became a headhunter, then sold major corporate real estate. Money was everywhere and life was wild. I lived and surfed in Shimoda. Japan is where I learned what a rōnin is: a man who has mastered himself. It's why this is called what it's called.

I took a break and rode a Royal Enfield across the deserts of India. Alone, no plan, nothing to prove. Some of the best days of my life. It was the first time I saw that a man can walk away from everything and be fine.
In my forties I moved to China and started from zero. Built companies, brought American business into China, sold major real estate in Shanghai. By then, starting over didn't scare me. It was just what I did.
Then I left all of it again and moved to Thailand. Started the channel. Built Rōnin Man. I'm in my sixties, in the best shape of my life, and having a real good time. The summits, the one-on-one work, this site: that's me passing on what I got.

The job, the house, the woman, the money. I've had them and lost them more than once. What I became is still here.
Body, mind, emotion, craft, freedom. That's the whole practice. Everything else comes from it.
I'm not selling you numbness. Feel all of it, then decide what you do about it. That's mastery.
Not being able to change is what traps a man. Make one real change and the next one gets easier.
So make them good ones. Jump in the water. Take the trip. Talk to the stranger. That's the whole philosophy in one line.
Most advice comes with a hidden ceiling. Mine doesn't.
When I was young, two older men gave me their time and their truth and never asked for anything back. That's where I got my start. The way I see it, a man's job is to grow as far as he can, then help the next man grow to his. I've done the first part. This is the second.
Over the years, men have written to tell me the channel got them through the worst stretch of their lives. I read every message myself. I still do.
How I work is simple. No script. I listen to the man in front of me, I tell him the truth, and I help him take the next right step. On a summit, that happens over a few days in Japan, Thailand, or Indonesia with a small band of good men. One-on-one, it's your real life on the table.
The place to go to start. The place to come back to.

A summit puts you in the water with good men. One-on-one puts your real life on the table. The men who walk through both go furthest.
